NEW COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR 2005
Loop 1- Starting
under the Montezuma town sign, (Elevation 10,400 ft.) take a
quick
left on Plymouth Road to the Plymouth mine. Hand-carry your
bike up the side, then around to the right and turn right on
Main Street.
Turn West up Saints John Road to the Town of Saints John. When
the road comes to a "T" in town, go left up past the
chimney to the mine (Elevation 11,100’). Turn left across
the stream down to the lowest point in the dip of the road, then
left (look for “Montezuma” sign on tree) into and
through the trees onto the single track across the side of Glacier
Mountain. Head down the “Bowling Alley” to Saints
John Road, right and down to "REVENGE CENTER" and
the official Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop 2- S&M
Loop (Spectators & Media)
Head down Main Street onto the “High Road” and go right onto Peru Creek Road. Follow road to Warden Gulch and across the Warden Gulch river crossing, (Elevation 10,421’). Follow the power line/ Jumbo Mine road then left onto and down the Peru Creek Trail. Go left onto the Old Toll "High" Road and the back way to Montezuma and the "REVENGE CENTER" and
the official Montezuma checkpoint (Checkpoint 2.1, STOP REQUIRED).
Loop
3- Night Loop
Take Montezuma Road heading towards Deer Creek. Climb Deer Creek
to the Divide, then head towards Middle Fork. Take Middle Fork
following the Swan River drainage past Swan Dyke, then go right
onto Tiger Road (Checkpoint 3.1, in front of Good Times Snowmobile
Tours; STOP REQUIRED) THIS IS THE OFFICIAL LUMINATION CHECKPOINT,
ALL RIDERS ARE EQUIPPED WITH NIGHT RIDING LIGHTS REFLECTORS,
ETC.!
Make a right on the North Fork road just after Good Times Tours
and proceed to the Colorado Trail. (GO THROUGH N. FORK FOREST
SERVICE GATE. DO NOT TAKE SHORTCUT PRIOR TO GATE!) Follow Colorado
Trail towards the “West Ridge” and continue on the
Colorado Trail until it exits near the Tiger Run R.V. Park. DO
NOT EXIT THROUGH THE R.V. PARK BUT TOWARDS THE DIVERSION TO THE
LEFT. Cross HWY. 9, continue up the “Gold Hill Trail; (Checkpoint
3.2 at Gold Hill Trailhead; STOP REQUIRED). Take Gold Hill trail
to the Peaks Trail. Go right on Peaks Trail all the way to Miner’s
Creek Road in the Town of Frisco (Elevation 9'100’). Turn
right on Miners Creek Road for 1/2 mile. Go left on paved "Bike
Path" all the way to the far north end of Frisco, 1.5 miles
to the Vail/Frisco fork in the "Bike Path", (Checkpoint
3.3, at Fiesta Jalisco restaurant STOP REQUIRED). Go right to
Frisco Main Street, turn right and go all the way on Main Street
toward the lake until it crosses US#9/Summit Boulevard. Take a
left onto and stay on the "Bike Path" all the way around
the west side of Lake Dillon. Turn left on Lake Dillon Drive.
Cross Hwy. 6, then take your immediate right on the Frontage Road.
Follow the Frontage Road until it turns to dirt. Go past the Forest
Service station. Go right on Tenderfoot Trail (dirt road). Follow
to the end, then take Oro Grande Trail to the dump and firing
range. Head down Landfill Road to Hwy. 6. Cross Hwy. 6 and rejoin
the bike path through Keystone to River Run. Take Montezuma Rd
back to "REVENGE CENTER" (Checkpoint 3.4, STOP REQUIRED)
and the official Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop 4 Gray’s Peak
Loop
Out of Montezuma, head north on the Old Toll "High"
Road to the Peru Creek Trail. Continue up and cross the river
twice. Turn left up Chihuahua Gulch. Keep to the right and go
up between Cooper Mountain and Gray’s Peak up into Ruby
Gulch and to Ruby Gulch Cabin. Head on up to the Continental
Divide,
and what will seem like the top of the world, Gray’s Peak
(Elevation 14,270’) (Checkpoint 4.1, STOP REQUIRED).
Proceed east down past Gray’s Lake to Horseshoe Basin.
Continue down and out the Peru Creek Trail and left via the
Old
Toll "High" Road back to Montezuma and the "REVENGE
CENTER" (Checkpoint 4.3, STOP REQUIRED) and the official
Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop 5
Leave Montezuma heading north onto Montezuma Rd. towards Keystone.
Make a right onto highway 9 towards Arapahoe Basin. at A-Basin
ascend service rd. to ski patrol Hut
(Checkpoint
5.1,
STOP
REQUIRED), Descend the Lenawee Trail towards Peru Creek. Take
a right onto Peru Creek
Rd. Make a left on High Rd. back to
Montezuma. "REVENGE CENTER" (Checkpoint 5.2, STOP REQUIRED)
and the official Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop
6
From Montezuma, head east up Morgan Gulch Trail to the saddle
on Collier Mountain (Checkpoint 6.1, STOP REQUIRED). Follow Morgan
Ridge to the Continental Divide trail. Follow singletrack to
Allan
Emory Mine. Continue down Warden Gulch to Peru Creek. Left on
Peru Creek and then left on the “High Road” back to
"REVENGE CENTER" (Checkpoint 6.2, STOP REQUIRED) and
the official Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop 7 (13 miles,
2,224’ of elevation climb.)
Leave Montezuma heading west up past Saints John. Continue up
past the Wild Irishman Mine to the General Teller Mine (Elevation
12,244’). Head south on around Glacier Ridge to the Continental
Divide, Forest Boundary Peak (Elevation 12,624’). Go north
down to the fork (Checkpoint 7.1, STOP REQUIRED), then down Deer
Creek to Montezuma Road and head to "REVENGE CENTER" (Checkpoint
7.2, STOP REQUIRED) and the official Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop 8
From Montezuma, head east up Morgan Gulch Trail to the saddle
on Collier Mountain (Checkpoint 8.1, STOP REQUIRED). Continue
to the Continental Divide then to the Sante Fe Plateau (Elevation
13,101’). Proceed directly northwest over the edge down
the Old Mule Pack Trail to the Bullion Mine. Continue down the
Old Mule Trail to the Snake River Drainage. Go right to Montezuma
Road, right down to Montezuma and the "REVENGE CENTER" (Checkpoint
8.2, STOP REQUIRED) and the official Montezuma checkpoint.
(Total at this point is 124 miles, 21,134’ of elevation
climb)
Loop 9
Leave Montezuma heading south up the Deer Creek Drainage to
the Continental Divide. Go left at the fork (Checkpoint 9.1,
STOP REQUIRED), up Radical Hill (Elevation 12,367’) and
then to Teller Mountain (Elevation 12,615’). Head down
to the Webster Pass Road, left to Montezuma Road, right down
Montezuma Road to "REVENGE CENTER" (Checkpoint 9.2,
STOP REQUIRED) and the official Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop 10
Head south on Montezuma Rd. Go left on Webster Pass road and
go right past Cashier Mine to the top of Teller Mountain (Elevation
12,615 ft.) over Radical Hill. Turn right towards Dear Creek.
(Checkpoint 10.1, STOP REQUIRED). Follow Dear Creek back to "REVENGE
CENTER" (Checkpoint 10.2, STOP REQUIRED) and the official
Montezuma checkpoint.
Loop 11 (14 miles, 2,638’ of
elevation climb.)
Head down Montezuma Road, go left to base of Keystone Ski Area.
Go up the ski area maintenance road to Ida Belle Mine (Elevation
11,607). Follow Joey’s Trail around the north side of Independence
Mountain and down to Hunki Dori Cabin (Checkpoint 12.1, STOP REQUIRED).
Head down Hunki Dori Road and then go around Bear Mountain across
the river to Saints John Road. Continue down to Montezuma Road
to "REVENGE CENTER" (Checkpoint 12.2, STOP REQUIRED)
and the official Montezuma checkpoint.
(Total at this point is 172 miles, 30,610’ of elevation
climb.)
Loop
12 (29 miles, 5,101’ of elevation climb.)

and camera crew.Head
out of Montezuma north onto the Old Toll "High" Road to
the Peru Creek Trail. Go right onto Peru Creek Trail, head right
up the Warden Gulch Trail to the Allan Emory Mine. Proceed straight
up the mountainside on the footpath to the saddle on Collier Mountain
(Elevation 12,400’), then east up Morgan Gulch to the top
of Sante Fe Peak (Elevation 13,180’) and the Continental Divide.
Continue south on the Continental Divide footpath over Sullivan
Mountain (Elevation13,134’), Geneva Peak (Elevation 13,255’),
Landslide Peak (Elevation13,238’), No Name (Elevation 13,214’)
and Red Cone (Elevation 12,801’) to Webster Pass (Elevation
12,096’). Proceed north down the Webster Pass Road and stay
left up to Teller Mountain (Elevation 12,615’), again to the
Continental Divide, to Forest Boundary Peak (Elevation 12,624’).
Follow Glacier Ridge west then north toward Glacier Mountain. At
No Name (Elevation 12,384’), go south and west to Keystone
Point (Elevation 12,408’), on to Bear Mountain (Elevation
12,585’). Go north, down into Grizzly Gulch to the Hunki Dori
Mine, to the Hunki Dori Cabin. Follow Joey’s trail around
the side of Bear Mountain to Ida Belle Mine (Elevation 11,607),
down to Keystone Road, up Montezuma Road to "REVENGE CENTER"
(Checkpoint 12.1, STOP REQUIRED) and the official Montezuma checkpoint.
